Growth and FIre Service

This week the Bristol Newspaper has been featuring the Exit 7 growth. On Tuesday they did an article on how the fire and police departments worked so well together. Well here is the article posted today

Bristolnews.com

Well here is a video from you tube from the Iaff on 1710 (I saw it on Roanokefire.com).

County Has two firefighters working each day and City has three working each day. The next company is Quint 1 and Engine 2 10 mins away........

Tell us what you think?

Staffing through out the Tri Cities is terrible. Just because WCFR has 2 people on staff, there is a larger possiblity that they will be on an EMS run. And what can 2 people do?? Working fire, stand outside, can't do interior work unless an imminent rescue is present.

What is E3 and L3 going to do? 3 people on 2 pieces of equipment. Again stand outside...We all know what we want to do, but we must not be led by are heart but by good common sense and proven tactics.

All this tax money comes in but it does not go to public safety. We are always placed on the back burner and we are always the after thought unless some one calls for help.

Its time to band together and show Solidarity. Bristol City should have 4 on each Engine, Minimum!

Fire Departments in Washington County should get the same, 1 Engine staffed with 4 people.

With out this change in culture by our Elected and appointed officials, more deaths to Civilians and Firefighters will occur.

Good point Tim. Does the public really know that the city is protected with only 8 firefighters on some days. And to break it down even more, 2 of the eight is pump operators at a minimum, 1 is command of the scene. That leaves 5, 2 to attack the fire, 2 to backup this crew for their protection from fire( this is for osha 2 in 2 out rule) , and that leaves 1. With this staffing level only one fireground objective can be done at a time. Do we attack the fire, do we search for victims, do we control utilities, do we ventilate, do we establish a R.I.T. for the firefighters safety? Is there proper releif for the people doing this work? There is alot of things to do at a fire scene other than just putting water on the fire. The publics safety along with the firefighters is paramount, and with staffing the way it is who is getting the short end of the stick.

well to answer the question do we have enough staffing?

No, that is a good point made... We do need 4 men to an engine, for firefighter safety. where are these men at? prolly riddin the truck that comes once a week to your house... and picks up the can at the drive way! we need to all join up and stick together that means BVFD, BTFD,and such as any of the departments that may assist like WCFR or GKVFD! Anyone else feel the same?!

well no offense! but who cares if WCFR only has 2 more to offer? Thats like another engine company to BVFD... I mean come on... don't knock'em because they try with what they have... it's not their fault they don't have a big budget like some other Washington County Departments.

Well Mr Anonymous, WCFR has a larger budget than other departments in Washington County. As a matter of fact WCFR and GKFD have a budget more that any other 2 or 3 departments. Also there is the subject of billing for EMS Transport.

Here are the amounts;

WCFR - $232655
GKFD - $176634
Meadowview - $76514
Abingdon - $76167
Glade Spring - $65079
Damascus - $60344
Green Springs - $51104
Brumley Gap - $45930
Clinch Mountain - $45930
Mount Rogers - $44095
Saltville - $8616

*This is the adopted Budget for FY 08, Also AFD recieved a $50000, 1 time payment for the Tower.

So as you can clearly see the Budget is not a problem. And Don't get me wrong, I am not bashing any Department I am simply stating facts. All citizens of Washington County and Bristol deserve better than what they are getting. 1,2 or even 3 man Engines is not what they need . The citizens need proper staffing to just meet the minimum standard of 1710 and in my opinion the citizens deserve more that the minimum.

The Bottom-Line is all departments are understaffed, whether it be for lack of funding or the "powers that be" not turning loose of money that is there. It isn't one over another, its across the board. There is no room for animosity when it comes to the safety of our brothers and sisters.
