How I feel!

Well I may touch a nerve and I hope I do but here it goes.....

As I was leaving station 1 this morning after a busy but good shift, I noticed all of the canidates coming to take the test. Everyone look nervous but they were all excited. Most were Volunteers somewhere and a few were coming from other (Larger) career departments. Well my point is they want to have the same job I have. As I was driving home I found myself wanting to be downtown today to see them all take the test, but I could not stay. I am excited that we are getting ready to hire and promote. All I hope is that whoever gets promoted and hired is that they love the job and they do the very best they can (and I don't see any problem with that). NOW my point, I have been lucky enough to work on every shift and this week I worked overtime on "B" shift and they have some hardworking and great guys.....but just as on ALL shifts we have some people that try to find the easy way out....in other word some people are a little lazy correction some people are VERY LAZY! Now this is my opinon and mine alone! First of all, I no we all can be lazy but somethings I witnessed over the past couple of weeks are uncalled for. I will not say names but you know who you are. All I have to say is I worked with guy yesterday and yes, he is a friend but more so he is a BROTHER. This person had been up all night sick he was very week BUT he still worked his BUTT OFF yesterday and I did not hear him complain NOT ONCE. You could tell that he did not feel well but there he was still working and working hard. This person is stronger on a bad day then most of us on a great day! We have a great department and great people......so all I want to say is the few people (and you know who you are) Shape up or get out so we can replace you with someone who will love the job and work hard! This means take a class, Teach a drill something get involved but just DO SOMETHING!

Good luck to the LT's taking the Captains test ....... and to the folks taking the test to get hired.

Comment on this please but NO NAMES other than yours if you want to.

Be carful what you say and to whom. One day everything can be OK, and another day it is not. In the end, you are the only person you can count on.

I agree 100%. The BROTHERHOOD is not here for some of us anymore. Thats a shame. People are here for a paycheck and or recognition. I love my job, the Dept. and most of all "my brothers". The Fire Department of Bristol Va. is my extended family, lets keep it that way !

If there is a brotherhood, it is a very small family. To many hypocrites that talk a good game while sticking it to another.

Work ethic says a lot about a person. If they have a poor ethic at the station it will be worse on the fire ground, this is where the real work lies. I give 100% at the mundane tasks such as cleaning the bathrooms and I will dam sure give 100% at a fire scene. The people who dont should not be here. Get out before you get someone hurt because of your laziness and lack of love for the job. You have to work hard for Brotherhood, its not given.

I love the emotion! Now that we all have it off our chest Let's Work together and change things. If we compete for promotion and we don't take care of each other then how can we get any better. Just for the record How many People call and check on the retired folks? I talk with a couple every once in a while, but not like I should. You may not like it but we are Family TOP to BOTTOM current employees and retired. Lets take care of each other (even the ones who maybe take the easy road) I still love my job and I can speak from experience.....Bristol Virginia is the BEST. PERIOD. And I am a blinger Sorry Capt. :> BUT I PROMISE I WILL GIVE 100% from cleaning the Bathrooms to pulling hose! and I all I want, is that everyone else does the same also!

We have to much going for us (New trucks, New burn building ETC...)

Hey guys, I need to fess up too ! Lately I have done nothing but bitch and moan and complain. We, our organization, worry about what we look like and not what we do, or how we do it. That to me is a problem. I apologize for my negative altitude. We need to make the best of all situations. C shift is awsome, for the most part our entire dept. is awsome ! Hey, a neighboring police dept. only received maybe 12 applications, we took almost 70. We already have the best job in the world, and a lot of people would kill for it ! I promise to try to make a difference, lets all try to make a difference ! I'm damn proud to be a part of the Bristol Va. Fire Dept. Lt. D. Loudy !

From where I sit it sounds like all you guys need is a little mustard in your eye and some sweet tea on the ceiling tile to raise the moral. I love reading about life at the BVFD. I miss you guys and keep up the good work.

I would like to take an oppertunity to voice an opinion that is strickly my own. I have had the pleasure to work with all the shifts of the BVFD on Rescue-3 before I was hired as a Firefighter in 2002. I cannot say that I have met a finer group of dedicated professionals. I have worked in EMS, as a vol. or paid, for over 30 years, and in no time have I worked with a group of people that take their job more seriously. We all have down days, for whatever reason, but as a "family" we pull each other through. I want to thank you guys for "being there" for me during a very tough time in my life. Knowing I have this extended family is a blessing at the least. Thanks to my "Brothers" here at the FD for listening.....offering advice....or kicking me in the butt when I need it. Most of all, thanks for sticking by me and not giving up on me. Your caring has meant more to me than I can say. Again, Thanks....even though the word isn't enough...I appreciate every one of you more than you know.
